One of the darkest blooms in the rose world, this handsome rose needs part-shade to prevent its delicate, blood-red petals from scorching. The long, pointed buds open to reveal large, full, cupped flowers looking very much as if they were cut from velvet. The thick petals are peony-like and are quite destroyed in wet weather. The 3 foot, upright, somewhat lanky shrub is an ideal container plant, although it does have some prickles. It should be placed where its lovely scent can be enjoyed during its long blooming period. Dubreuil was a tailer in Lyons, France, before he took up rose hybridizing; he was the grandfather of Francis Meilland. ZONES 4-9.
